Mountain Movers @Vale

Fun, support and learning for home educating families based in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Our Past

In 2017, a small group of like-minded home educating families came together to form a support group in the seaside town of Barry. Made famous by the TV show Gavin and Stacey. Despite this glitzy showbiz background, there was an all too familiar lack of support or understanding for home educating families.

Very soon, our small gatherings expanded and Home Education Barry (aka HEB) was well established. As HEB grew in popularity, in 2019 there was an opportunity to take over a registered home education charity (Bridgend Home Educators Charity) with a rich history of success behind it. Whilst this brought with it opportunities for funding, it also brought with it significant administrative workloads that were overwhelming. So in August 2021, we decided to link up with Mountain Movers another local registered charity with the same aims as HEB, to pool our collective volunteer time on the administrative tasks of running a charity and so HEB closed its charity status and we became part of Mountain Movers.

The United Present

Mountain Movers @ Vale is managed by myself Donna as a trustee for Mountain Movers. I have an enthusiastic experienced committee that help run sessions with me. We offer the home educating community within the Vale of Glamorgan a local base of support. Where all home educating families are welcomed. A place where friendships are made and nurtured and educational opportunities enrich the journey of home education.

At Mountain Movers @ Vale, we meet every Tuesday at Alexander Community Centre in Barry. Here we offer a wide variety of activities from free play, STEM Lego to resin jewellery making. We also regularly host qualified DBS checked and referenced Tutors offering educational lessons. This year we have our fantastic physics tutor returning.

We also have our own space in a community garden which we have been renovating for the last two years. We usually meet here on Thursdays.

We host regularly educational trips and outings.

Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much

The Future - Together

We are super excited for the future.

We have swimming lessons coming soon at a fantastic rate for our members. We will also be taking part in joint projects with Mountain Movers @ Swansea Valley including this year’s Autumn Watch

Membership is open to all home educating families and allows families to take part in both activities here in the Vale and those taking part with @Swansea Valley.
